The Kirkkonummi Well-being Center offers flexible, accessible, and integrated healthcare and social services based on a one-stop-shop principle.
The Kirkkonummi Well-being Center in Kirkkonummi, Finland, provides a
comprehensive wide range of social and health services under one roof for the
inhabitants of the area.
Designed closely in accordance with the modern principles of the Finnish social and
health services reform, the center delivers easy-access wellbeing services. The
facilities house an acute and non-urgent reception, imaging (X-ray), laboratory
services, dental care, rehabilitation and an assistive device unit, as well as maternity,
child, and family clinics, elderly services, and comprehensive family services.
Furthermore, the center integrates vital social support forms, including adult social
work, social services for families, and child welfare.
By bringing numerous different operations together under the same roof, the center
operates on a "one-stop shop" principle, ensuring that the accessibility of all services is seamless and straightforward for the client.
Healthcare and social services change over time as do Kirkkonummi's facilities
One of the main drivers in designing the Kirkkonummi Well-being Center was the need for straightforward usability, clear orientation, and smooth navigation. In close collaboration between the architectural design team and healthcare operations specialists, the project heavily analyzed patient flows, logistics, and space utilization rates. Based on this joint data-driven expertise, the space usage was highly optimized and a completely new operational model for the wellbeing center was developed to support the multi-functional environment.
The architectural design is highly systematic and modular. The consultation and examination rooms are designed with universal, recurring functionalities and layout solutions, making it effortless for the staff to work flexibly across different departments.
This functional integration was seamlessly carried out to the specialized equipment layouts, which were designed through close cooperation with the team responsible for the fixed hospital equipment and built-in furniture planning.
In the future, this universal and adaptable approach ensures that modifying, re-locating, and expanding the functions of the center will be significantly faster and much more cost-effective. Built with a flexible structural frame, the building minimizes fixed, impeding structures, allowing the spaces to evolve alongside changing future
healthcare needs.
The heart of the building is the spacious, central main lobby that guides visitors intuitively. The architectural solutions maximize the inflow of natural light, which, combined with the carefully selected fresh color palette and warm wood surfaces in the interior, creates a bright, calming, and airy atmosphere that supports healing and wellbeing.
Ensuring efficiency and sustainability throughout the whole lifecycle
The Kirkkonummi Wellbeing Center project was carried out with successful and strict cost control. Thanks to the thorough upfront operational and spatial optimization, cost-efficiency was integrated into every stage. This required tight, multi-disciplinary cooperation between the architects and engineering teams, with the building
advanced HVAC and electrical systems designed to ensure highly functional, reliable, and modern engineering solutions tailored to the strict demands of a healthcare facility.
Environmental responsibility and durability guided the design choices throughout the project. Instead of single-focus calculations, sustainability is achieved through high-quality and durable material choices that withstand heavy use and reduce long-term
operational and maintenance costs.
From an environmental perspective, sustainable engineering is also heavily reflected in the surrounding site management, where advanced and eco-friendly stormwater management was emphasized to blend the large-scale public facility responsibly into
its surrounding local environment.
